Soldier Family Christmas collecting begins

For 14 years Soldier Family Christmas worked to provide toys and food for many families of the 7th Battalion at Ft. Campbell. Why the 7th? For 37 years the 7th worked with Logan County to help our citizens during times of need. From assisting during floods, snows, and ice storms to emergency medical transportation. They have also worked with Bro. Joe’s Family Christmas Country Ham Breakfast. The 7th Battalion has been a great asset to our county.

Soldier Family Christmas was the brain child of Patricia Hedges, who at the time was the president of the Logan County Democratic Women’s Club. She partnered with Bro. Joe Carrico, Agape Service Foundation, and Martha Jane King, our State Representative to turn her idea into a reality. With the help of the Women’s Democratic Club, Agape, the Women’s Republican Club, State Representative Martha Jane King, many civic organizations, local churches, and the citizens of Logan County, the program has grown and flourished.

Last year the 7th Battalion merged with the 6th Battalion so the program was given the opportunity to work with the 6th in the same manner.

In 2015, the program provided close to 250 gifts to children from birth to 12 for the children of the lowest paid soldiers in the 6th. Gift cards in the amount of $10 were given to children ages 13-18 and $20 gift cards to the younger soldiers to help them go home for Christmas. In addition, the Republican Women donated over 90 food boxes, and money was donated from the Fellowship Church of Christ Women’s Group and the United Methodist Men’s Group to purchase meat for the boxes.

There are several ways you can help this year. Donate at the road block on 9th and Nashville Road or Main and 2nd Street on Nov. 11 from 3-5 p.m. Eat in the lobby at McDonald’s on Nov. 15 from 4-7 p.m., where 20 percent of the sales will go to the program. Come by our booth on the square during the Russellville Open House on Nov. 20 to donate cash, a $10 Wal-Mart gift card accompanied by a receipt, unwrapped toys about $10 value, or pampers and wipes. You can buy a chance for a UK Basketball game ($5 for one or $10 for three). You can mail a check to Evelda Stearsman, made out to Soldier Family Christmas by Dec. 1 at 2026 Stevenson Mill Road, Russellville, KY. 42276.

If you have any questions, please call Evelda Stearsman at 270-725-1508 or Agape at 270-726-7109 and talk to Teresa.
