Russellville Independent schools have been in session for a week now and superintendent Leon Smith says that it’s the smoothest start to a school year that he has seen in the seven years he has been heading up the district.
“We’ve just gotten off to a fantastic start,” Smith said. “This is probably the best start of a school year that we have had since I have been here in Russellville.”
A big part of that is because the administration at both Stevenson Elementary School and Russellville High School has not seen any big changes in the past year.
“So much of our great start is because of the principals and assistant principals in our buildings,” Smith said. “We didn’t have any turnover and they’ve done a really good job in organization and planning when getting ready for the new year. I couldn’t be more pleased.”
In addition to getting off to a smooth start, the Russellville district has also seen an influx of new students this year.
“I’m really happy to say that our enrollment is up this year over where it was last year,” Smith said. “And there is a lot of energy and excitement in our schools.”
While the administration at both schools is the same with Lisa White leading Stevenson Elementary and Kim McDaniel taking care of the high school, as with most years; there are plenty of new teachers.
“The new staff that we’ve hired seem to be really strong and are just doing a great job so far,” Smith said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. We just have a lot of positives in our district overall right now.”
