Logan County Coroner Mary Givens and her staff will get a little relief from having to travel over two hours to take a body to get an autopsy. The Madisonville Medical Examiner’s office opened its doors once again, said Givens at the Tuesday, July 26 meeting of the fiscal court.
The Madisonville Medical Examiner’s Office has been closed on and off again over the past few years as it has been difficult to keep an examiner at that location. Retirements as well as departures have forced regional coroners to take the long trip to Louisville, which was the next closest office to perform an autopsy.
When coroners declare a person deceased, there are times an autopsy is required to find the reason behind the death. It costs each county travel expenses such as fuel to take a body to the medical examiner.
Givens said she will still have to travel to Louisville some depending on the hours of operation in Madisonville.
Givens is still helping to cover Todd County as a coroner, and has been working quite a bit as of late with all of the recent deaths occurring in and around our community.
