Crash on Coopertown causes death of young woman

A fatal crash sends two to hospital and leaves one dead.


A 20-year-old woman lost her life Sunday, July 17, 2016, when she collided head-on with another vehicle on Coopertown Quality Road.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene at approximately 1:10 p.m. When police arrived, deputies began a preliminary investigation where it was determined at that time Makayla Williams of Lewisburg was driving west on Coopertown Quality Road when she lost control of her 1996 Toyota Corolla. Williams collided head-on with a 2014 Dodge van driven by Alfred Hubbs, 79, of Russellville, with his wife Barbara, 75, as a passenger. The couple was traveling east.

Mrs. Hubbs sustained serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Hubbs was taken by ambulance to Logan Memorial Hospital. Ms. Williams was not wearing seat belt at time of collision. She was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene by Logan County Coroner Mary Givens.

The accident is still under investigation and is being conducted by Master Patrolman Jeff Sanford of the Russellville Police Department. Sanford was assisted at the scene by Sheriff Wallace Whittaker and numerous deputies of the Logan County Sheriffs Department. Also assisting was the Lewisburg Rural Fire Department and Logan County EMS.
