The Russellville Arts Council concluded its sixth annual Summer Drama Camp over the weekend with three performances of “Suessical, Jr.” at the Russellville High School deGraffenreid Auditorium.
This year production was a success, according to director Larry Vaught, thanks in large part to the hard work and dedication of the actors and support staff.
“I thought that the kids just had a superb effort this year with wonderful characterizations,” Vaught said. “The talent just rose as each kid took their parts and developed a unique world of Suess.”
As in past years, a host of adults helped by volunteering with lighting, sets, scenery, props, makeup and costumes.
“The lighting effects that Brian Brown provided, the costuming and extra detail in makeup just really enhanced the performance,” Vaught said. “Everyone just gave 110 percent to help support the kids.”
Some of the performers had been a part of this particular play before when it was produced by the Logan County middle schools.
“It was nice to have some students that had been in this play in middle school,” Vaught said. “And several of them got to take on new roles this time.”
Performers rehearsed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. all last week to prepare for the performances. Many of the players worked an additional two weeks prior to the camp to get everything down.
“This particular show, because its so music driven and there was much more choreography – it took more time to learn,” Vaught said. “Basically the kids had to have all the music memorized to react to it. They had to have the whole thing memorized and it took a little more time than some of the plays we have done in the past.”

Plans have already begun for next year’s summer drama camp, and if things go well – there may be two camps instead of just one.
“We’re still planning to shoot toward next summer,” Vaught said. “We are even thinking about the possibility of having one more the lower elementary kids and one that will include middle and high schoolers and maybe even adults. That will just depend if we can get the funding together, though.”
