Russellville Police Department detective Kenneth Edmonds is looking into a murder case that has been open for 26 years.
Glenn Shaffer of Russellville was shot and killed in April of 1990 and his killer was never found.
“This is the only unsolved murder we have in Russellville,” Edmonds said. “It has been laying there for so many years, I just wanted to see if I can solve it. It needs to be tried to be solved.”
Edmonds was in the police academy when the murder happened and did not work on the original case.
According to the file, in April of 1990, a shooting occurred between East 3rd and East 4th Street in Russellville. The shooting incident either took place around 11:55 pm on the 26th or on or around midnight on the 27th. In this case, the victim was Glenn Shaffer, a known resident of Russellville. Glenn Shaffer had left the Minit Mart located at 1st and Peyton Street around the times mentioned above after buying cigarettes and bubble gum. The clerk stated when Shaffer left the store, he walked toward the area of East 2nd Street.
During the investigation, a witness was located who heard shots fired in the area of East 3rd or East 4th Street. The witness then observed a white male walking toward East 2nd Street.
Shortly after the gunshot, Russellville Dispatch was contacted by a person stating a man had been shot and he was located at 562 East 2nd Street. At the time of the call, the victim was still alive. After the medical personnel arrived, the victim was taken to Logan Memorial Hospital and then transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN where he died of the gunshot wound.
The weapon used in this case was never located. After a large area was searched, the victim’s wallet was found in the daylight hours between East 3rd and East 4th Street.
Edmonds said that he hopes someone comes forward who knows something about the case and is willing to talk about it.
“Somebody that has some information maybe would talk now, because a lot of time has passed,” he said.
Since the crime occurred 26 years ago, some of the people Edmonds would have been re-interviewing have died.
“The person who heard the shot was in his 70s at the time and has passed,” Edmonds said. “I have a list of about 30 to 35 names of people I need to talk with and some of the others are dead too.”
Edmonds said that he has talked with one individual, who was considered a strong suspect at the time, and has ruled him out.
“He is in the penitentiary now and I went there to talk to him,” Edmonds said. “I believe now that he didn’t have anything to do with it. I feel comfortable that this person did not do it.”
Edmonds said he feels strongly that one of the other names on his list is likely the perpetrator, or at least knows who the killer is.
