Citizens help nab shoplifter

On May 05, 2016, the Russellville Police Department responded to a shoplifting complaint at Wal-Mart. While en route to the complaint, officers were advised at least one male suspect was being physically detained, and another male suspect fled the scene in a red pickup truck.

Officers arrived at Wal-Mart where it was discovered the two males attempted to steal several items of value from the store. When Daniel Barrett, of Clarksville, Tenn., was stopped by employees, he attempted to physically remove items from their possession. That is when a concerned citizen intervened and helped subdue him.

At that time, the driver of the truck presented a can of pepper spray and began dispensing it toward the Wal-Mart employees and the citizen providing assistance.

Officer Bill Moore of the Russellville Police Department located the red Chevrolet pickup on HWY 79 South, which led to a vehicle pursuit involving several agencies. The pursuit continued to Clarksville, Tenn., however, the driver was able to avoid apprehension.

The citizen who assisted in the apprehension of Daniel Barrett was transported to Logan Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

Barrett was lodged at the Logan County Detention Center on the charge of Robbery 2nd Degree. The investigation into the identity of the male driver is ongoing at this time.

Assisting the Russellville Police Department in this case were the Logan County Sheriff Department, Todd County Sheriff Department, and the Kentucky State Police.

If you have any information about the driver of the truck, please contact the Russellville Police Department, or Crime Stoppers.
