Logan County’s 2016 Relay for Life event has a new time and location. Come out and join the American Cancer Society and the many volunteers who pledge their support to find a cure to cancer.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event has been a returning fundraiser in Logan County for years. The event helps raise money to help find a cure for cancer, which affects everyone at some point, rather it be personally or a family or friend.
In the past the all night event has been held in June at the Logan County Football field. This year the event has been moved to Saturday, April 30, it is no longer over night beginning at 6 p.m. to midnight, and it is being held at the the Logan County Ag Arena off the 68 Bypass in Russellville.
Although many changes have been made, the theme remains the same. There will be an Opening Ceremony which brings everyone together for a high-energy event kickoff that celebrates the lives of those who have battled cancer, and reminds us all that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority. There will be a Survivors Lap where cancer survivors take the first lap around the track. Cheered on by the other participants and the sound of upbeat music, the Survivors Lap lets all cancer survivors at the event celebrate their victory over cancer. There will be a Caregivers Lap where anyone who ever cared for someone with cancer walks a special lap so they can be honored. Caregivers can walk this lap with the person they helped if they are also present.
Also featured will be a Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m. At the candlelight Luminaria Ceremony there will be a remembering of loved ones lost to cancer, support for people who currently have cancer, and honoring people who fought cancer in the past. It’s a powerful part of the event because it provides an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.
The Closing Ceremony celebrates what has been accomplished together. It’s also a time to remember the lives of those lost, and to commit to continuing the fight against this disease over the next year.
There will also be an auction held at 7 p.m. Guest auctioneer is Brent Summers.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement symbolizes hope and our shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love. If cancer has touched your life, participating in a Relay For Life event is a way to take action and help finish the fight. This is your opportunity to honor cancer survivors, remember those you have lost, and raise funds and awareness to fight back and help end cancer forever.
