Two men were arrested on Sunday for drug charges after being pulled over for a routine speeding violation.
On Jan. 3, 2016, at 5:28 p.m., deputy Jarrod Lyons of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding on Terry Wilcutt Hwy. Upon making contact with Merele D. Watkins, 24, of Russellville, who was in the driver’s seat, deputy Lyons detected a strong odor of marijuana permeating from the inside of the vehicle.
Also in the vehicle were 23-year-old Justin Shifflett of Russellville and Amber Webb.
A search of the vehicle revealed illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia located in the rear passenger compartment.
Shifflett was issued a citation to appear in court to answer for the drug charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Watkins was arrested and lodged in the Logan County Detention Center on charges of speeding 16 mph over limit; possession of a controlled substance, 1st degree (cocaine), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputy Lyons was assisted on scene by Captain David Kitchens of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department.
