Get ready!

By Gene Vincent - Pastor, Beechland Baptist Church

It started out a beautiful morning yet unseasonably warm with a light breeze. But suddenly the wind picked up and as I looked out of the window of my study, one of the pillows from the front porch rocker went flying across the yard. Naturally I rushed out and caught the pillow, gathered the others and brought them inside.

Things change and at times the changes occur quickly, such as the pillow sitting on the rocker one minute and then flying across the yard the next moment. When God works there are times when He moves quickly and yet there are also movements of God that seem to take forever. But the important thing that I have to constantly remind myself of is that He is working! God never stops trying to enhance the Christian life. For He is working on me, preparing my next step and strengthening me for His planned ministry ahead.

Frequently, I think that I need to do something or say something, but more often than not, I need to simply allow the His Spirit – time to work. As Zechariah 4:6 reminds me, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.” As the Spirit of the Lord works, I too must work. Not at trying to His job, but by “Spiritually Exercising” my heart and mind. In essence I need to work – using my time wisely and at being prepared for His service and ministry at any moment.

Think of the Professional Athlete. They do not play or compete constantly but when they are not playing they have to stay in shape in order to be ready when called from the bench. The same is true for the Warrior/Soldier, they are not constantly fighting, but they must be constantly working and always ready to defend and protect.

I, nor you, are aware of the next ministry moment God has planned for us, but we must be faithful preparing, for our next opportunity for ministry is coming!
