There has been another recent incident involving a violent death of an animal at the Logan County Animal Shelter.

This makes three confirmed deaths by vandals in past three months.

“Something is going on out here and we are determined with the police’s help to catch whoever is doing it,” said shelter director Elin Pitts.

According to Pitts, the most recent killing occurred sometime between the hours of 5 and 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 4.

Pitts said employees had gone home for the day at 5 p.m. She said she arrived at the shelter at 6:15 p.m. to load up supplies for some pets the police had located in a home where their owner had died. Upon arriving at the shelter, just over an hour after employees had left, Pitts found a Bassett hound dead in the male runs behind the shelter shot through the head.

In January, it was reported that someone had broken into the shelter through the back door and decapitated a kitten leaving it on the floor. During that same night a Shepherd mix dog had been shot. According to autopsy reports that just came in there were bullets found in that dog.

Another autopsy will be preformed on the Bassett hound; however, Pitts said she is confident it is a bullet wound like the other dog.

This type of behavior has got employees a little scared. “This isn’t a single incident, but instead a pattern,” said Pitts who is worried someone may be watching the shelter.

“For this to happen right after we left it makes you wonder if someone was waiting for us to leave,” said employee Amanda Johnson.

A few weeks ago it was reported in the news that someone had broken into the Grayson County Animal Shelter and put a dog in with some cats that were let loose. The cats were killed by the dog. There were also several cat cages turned over and a large amount of cash was taken.

“We don’t keep cash at the Logan shelter,” said Pitts adding, “So no one needs to think they are going to get any money by breaking in our shelter.”

But Pitts doesn’t know if money was the motive since it doesn’t seem like the perpetrators tried to break into the office area either time. “I think these are sick individuals who are getting kicks out of killing animals,” said Pitts adding, “Which makes it even more scary to think there are people out there who would do something so cruel.”

Humane Society Board President Sharon Miles gave a statement saying, “We are determined to catch whoever is responsible for these killings. We are going to be working closely with authorities to help aid them in apprehending those who have been taking the lives of our animals. We are confident that when they are caught they will be charged and prosecuted to the fullest of the law.”

i think people that shoot animals should be locked up for life. Those animals at that shelters are insented they shouldnt be shooted they are looking for a home to be in with a loving family. I know my parents have three dashaund and there are loved everyday and we have had lots of animals in myself since i was a little girl and i love animals myself but for those who can just shoot a dog like that are very sick in the head its not right. If you love animals help try and find these animals a very loving home instead of killing them at shelter. But whoever you are GOD will get you in the end. That is gods creation there and you will be punish for killing one of his creation.

Thank you,
