Doris Melton Powell, 79, of Clifty, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at her home.

She was born in Muhlenberg County April 16, 1932, a daughter of the late Elver and Flossie Sweeney Melton. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her step-mother, Angie Farmer Melton and her husband, Eulis W. Powell in 1998.

Mrs. Powell was a teacher at Sharon Grove School, Clifty School and Elkton School. She was also the Adult Ed teacher and a supervisor at the Todd County Board of Education. She was one of the founders of the Todd County Public Library, past president of Delta Kappa Gama Teacher Sorority, past member of Pennyroyal Art Council in Hopkinsville and the Gideons Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Joines Chapel General Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Womens Missionary Society.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at Joines Chapel General Baptist Church with Reverend Curt Yarbrough; her grandsons, Ashley Groves and Jeremy Johnston, and her grand-son-in-law, Darian Ray officiating. Burial followed in the Heltsley Cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 17 from 4-8 p.m. at Latham Funeral Home and Friday, Nov. 18 after 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.

She is survived by her son, Stevie Powell and wife Brenda of Clifty; her daughters, Wanda Johnston and husband Carl of Kirkmansville and Darlene Groves and husband Lanny of Clifty; her grandchildren, Ashley Groves, Stephanie Johnston Alvis, Brian Groves, Andy Powell, Jeremy Johnston, Shannon Powell Ray and Bradley Powell, and 18 great-grandchildren.
