MLK commemorative events planned

The 27th annual Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr. Commemorative Unity Walk Celebration will be held this Friday morning.

The event will begin at 8:15 a.m. at Bank Street A.M.E. Church on East Fifth Street in Russellville and the walk will then proceed to the old Logan County Courthouse where a program, along with a question and answer session with local high school students, will take place.

“Our community, parents, leaders, elected officials, representatives of different organizations, schools, churches, businesses and groups are invited to attend to support our youth and be a part of the question and answer session on how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘s philosophies impacted their lives in our community,” said Marvinia Neblett of Community Projects Inc., which organizes the event.

Among those scheduled to attend are Commonwealth Attorney Gail Guiling, Rev. Lee Fishback, Logan County High and Russellville High school systems, parents, churches, community and the public who have been consistent supporters.

And on Saturday morning, there will be a Martin Luther King, Jr. Jubilee Celebration.

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP branch will celebrate the history, life and legacy of the civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 9 a.m. in KP Hall on the corner of 5th and Morgan streets.

The guest speaker will be Rev. Barrett Wright, pastor of First Baptist Church in Scottsville. A homemade breakfast will be served for a donation of $5. The community is asked to join in the celebration of this important event.
