A Godfrey woman was charged Friday in Madison County Circuit Court with three felony charges of criminal neglect of an elderly person, Madison County Sheriff Robert J. Hertz said in a press release.
The woman is identified as Marjorie E. Phillips, 47, of the 4700 block of Storeyland Drive.
On Jan. 1 at approximately 7:01 p.m., the Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4700 block of Storeyland Drive, Godfrey, in reference to a 911 caller reporting the death of her mother. Deputies met with the caller, who was identified as Marjorie E. Phillips. Phillips told deputies she returned home at approximately 5:30 p.m., after having been gone for approximately 24 hours, and found her mother, Marjorie B. Phillips, 71, deceased. The initial responding deputies found the interior of the residence to be in deplorable condition, with food, dirty dishes, debris and household goods piled throughout the home.
Investigators with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison County Coroner’s Office were called to the scene. Marjorie E. Phillips and others affiliated with the incident were interviewed by investigators. A search warrant was obtained for the home. The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigative Unit assisted investigators in processing the scene. Evidence of neglect was discovered during the interviews and search of the home
An autopsy of the victim was performed on Thursday, Jan. 2. Evidence of neglect was discovered during the autopsy. Marjorie E. Phillips was detained by investigators after being questioned. Phillips was held in the Madison County Jail pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The felony warrant and information was signed by the Honorable Judge Kyle A. Napp, who set bond at $250,000.
